Fund The Truth Saga, Book 2 and Get Book 1 & 2

Check out the various rewards, starting at just $5.00: http://kck.st/H0QSlB

LIBERTY IS GONE, BUT TRUTH REMAINS. The Truth Saga tells of Kade Truth’s super-powered battle against the growing forces of evil.

The Truth Saga is my baby. I have nurtured the ideas behind it for a decade and it’s so awesome and rewarding to see it spread it’s wings with Forging Truth. (No pun intended, to be sure.) Later this month, I will be doing a blog tour with 20+ stops on to promote the series. I’ll also be doing a few giveaways along the way.

With your help, I’d like to put Corrupting Truth, the second volume in The Truth Saga, on the map, as well. Here’s a little more about what I’m hoping to accomplish.

Primary Project Goal: My goal is to grow momentum and a larger following for my current novel, Forging Truth, as well as for The Truth Saga as a whole. I will be able to spread the word, gauge the interest in and reception of my characters, and get real-time feedback from the Kickstarter community.

Secondary Project Goal: It is also my goal to utilize funds gained through my Kickstarter campaign to pay for any expenses related to the set up and promotion of The Truth Saga. Some of the potential expenses include book cover design, supplemental material layout and design, advertisement and promotions, fees, leasing space at conventions, travel to conventions, purchasing both author and review copies, and maybe I’ll grab some Taco Bell with what’s left over.

Supporting Material: For more about me and The Truth Saga, be sure to check out my website http://raymondmasters.wordpress.com/.

  1. Update #1: Beefing It Up A Little

Hello, everyone. Thanks for checking out my campaign and reading all about the world of The Truth Saga. If you’ve stopped by, before, then you probably noticed there wasn’t very much meat on the bone of my project. To be honest, my intentions were to update, daily, with different anecdotes and behind the scenes goodness. Unfortunately, I haven’t been home much, due to my “real” job. I plan to rectify that lack of communication/information starting today.

I updated a couple of the FAQ’s that I had previously left with a “To be continued…” placeholder. I also added a couple of new items there. While I was in an editing mood, I even tweaked the front page a little. I had originally typed up an intro, but somewhere between development and launch, it went bye-bye.

So, I’m letting you guys drive this thing. What would you like to see on here? I have ideas, but I’d love to hear from you.

Oh, and definitely, thank you to my four wonderful backers. You guys rock!

    Talk to you soon,

    Raymond

  2. Update #2: Why Write A Super-hero-esque Story?

I first began kicking around the idea of a super-hero-style novel over a decade ago. I’ve always been a lover of comics; and, of course, I wanted to write my own some day. About the time I realized I couldn’t just pull an artist (or the money for one) out of my … er … comic long box, I decided to try my hand at writing the story out in prose, instead. This turned out to be more of a treat than a challenge, but it definitely kept me on my toes. I never got bogged down or suffered from writers block, but I sure had to constantly go back and reread different sections to keep from contradicting myself. Now that I’m writing the sequel, I find myself popping in little highlighted notes to myself: “Double-check the color of Jess’s eyes.” I can’t imagine the difficulty of putting together something like The Dark Tower or The Dresden Files.

But why am I drawn to the super-hero character-type? Two reasons, really:

1.) The Super: Why wouldn’t you like to see your main characters pulling off crazy, unbelievable superhuman feats? With powers/abilities might come great responsibility, but it also comes with much-kick-butted-ness.

2.) The Hero: But you cannot stop there. Part of the fun is watching what that person does with his powers. Will he/she use them for good or for evil? Or does he/she fall more in the middle, as is most common in both modern-day tales and real life?

From a writer standpoint, it’s a total blast to take some average Joe and turn him into this hero. I’m not entirely sure which way he’ll turn. I mean, hello! Corrupting Truth, anyone? Okay, so maybe I have an inkling of where he’s headed. And, I could tell you … But I’d rather you pick up the book. Heh.

On a side note, I finally did break into comics. To be honest, I snuck in when they weren’t looking. I now have one story out in a comic, published by Incubator Press. I have another waiting in the wings with Viper Comics. Of course, neither of those are in the Flights & Tights genre; they’re both horror tales. But that’s for another time and place.

Thanks for stopping by, folks. Oh, and check it out! I’ve had 2 new backers for a total of 3% funded toward my goal. Thank guys!

    – Raymond

  3. Update #3: When Angels Meet Metahumans

I’ve explained The Truth Saga at different times as “When Angels Meet Metahumans.” Stylistically, the first book, Forging Truth, does a good job of introducing that feel. But, that book was primarily about Kade Truth and what’s going on with him. Corrupting Truth goes quite a bit deeper into the metahuman side of things.

There is an underground world of metas operating, well, underground. The Messiah Complex is a loose collection of super-powered individuals, in search of the next messiah. If they cannot locate him amongst their “recruits,” then they are determined to craft their own.

How does Kade factor in with this group? Willingly, at first, but then as things start to heat up, well … Curiosity soon turns to horror; and Kade is put to the ultimate test.

  4. Update #4: The Rewards, Part 1

Aiding Truth: Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus a personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth

So, what does your $5 donation get you? I will gift you a Kindle or Smashwords copy of Forging Truth to read on the go. This is pretty much a breakeven donation/reward. This way, though, you get a personalized “thank you” from me through the really nifty Kindlegraph service. This can be kept in a file on your Kindle or on your computer. Not enough thanks? I’ll also single you out for a pat on the back on Nothing To See Here my author blog. Also, since I’m self-publishing again, I can have hundreds of pages in the acknowledgements section of Corrupting Truth set aside for yet another volley of thanksgiving. Shoot, I want you guys to know I appreciate you after all.

Helping Truth: Signed Paperback of Forging Truth, Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus the personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth. (NOTE: On this and any other shipped item, please, add $10 for International Shipping.)

For $20 I’ll tack on a signed paperback of book one. This is another breakeven deals. Pretty much you’re buying the product here but getting the extras along with it. As for the part about international shipping, I took a quick look around Kickstarter to see just how that was being handled, and $10 is what I came across. I guess that’s cool, as I received my first international patron today.

Supporting Truth: Kindle (or other digital) copy of Corrupting Truth, Signed Paperback of Forging Truth, Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus the personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth

A $25 donation will land you one of the first digital copies of Corrupting Truth. That’s what this thing is all about to me. Gaining momentum through those interested enough to not only read the first book in a new series, but to be willing to chance its sequels. This is also a breakeven reward.

Backing Truth: Signed Paperback of Corrupting Truth, Kindle (or other digital) copy of Corrupting Truth, Signed Paperback of Forging Truth, Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus the personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth

$40 is a chunk of change, right? Have no fear, you’re getting what you pay for. Now we’re talking a digital copy of both books, a paperback of both books, and my undying gratitude. That gratitude is gratis just for checking out my project, but I still like to throw that out there.

Okay, that’s all for tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll try to pop in The Rewards, Part 2. Then, I’ll be out of state till Friday and probably won’t be able to do any updates till then. Before I go, though, I wanted to thank Keith Hall. He opted for the digital copy of Forging Truth. Thanks, Keith!

    Later,

    Raymond

  5. Update #5: The Rewards, Part 2

Rewarding Truth: Companion Book (paperback) with Short Stories and DVD-Style Extras for the Truth Saga, Signed Paperback of Corrupting Truth, Kindle (or other digital) copy of Corrupting Truth, Signed Paperback of Forging Truth, Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus the personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth

What does a $60 donation get you? Well, on top of the rewards and “thank you’s” from the previous rewards, you now get a companion book that will give in-depth character bios, some commentary on various parts of The Truth Saga, some of Caduceus’ recipes, the lyrics to Sleepy Jake, and a smattering of short stories. Note: This will be available only to KICKSTARTER backers (and a handful of my closest friends and family) until June 30, 2013!!

Dedicating Truth: A short story dedicated to you in the Companion Book for the Truth Saga, Companion Book with Short Stories and DVD-Style Extras for the Truth Saga, Signed Paperback of Corrupting Truth, Kindle (or other digital) copy of Corrupting Truth, Signed Paperback of Forging Truth, Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus the personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth

For $75, you can now have a 5,000-word to 10,000-word story dedicated to you in the companion collection. Pretty snazzy, right? But for handing me $75 of your hard-earned cash, you definitely deserve it.

Funding Truth: Special Hardback, Limited Kickstarter Editions of Forging Truth, Corrupting Truth, and the Companion Book of Short Stories and DVD-Style Extras for the Truth Saga, plus Signed Paperback of Corrupting Truth, Kindle (or other digital) copy of Corrupting Truth, Signed Paperback of Forging Truth, Kindle (or other digital) Copy of Forging Truth, plus the personalized, signed Kindlegraph, as well as a thank you shout out on my blog, and a listing in the acknowledgements of Corrupting Truth

$125 is quite a jump from $75, but hardbacks are expensive when purchased as print-on-demand. Unfortunately, at the moment I cannot do a bulk order. Hopefully, I’ll have some interest here. I know, there’s something to be said about holding a heavy volume in your hands. The sound of both the books spine cracking, as well as your own, as you lift it into your lap.

Creating Truth: Help me create a character for the series, along with his/her name and power set (within guidelines, of course). You will be credited for the assist. Oh, plus, you’ll get all the rewards from Reward #7.

The final reward is $150. It’s a pretty popular reward on here, as far as I’ve seen. It’s the opportunity to create and name a character in The Truth Saga. There will be the potential for Kade to cross paths with various metahumans down the road. Why not help me to come up with their core power sets? Have a clever name bouncing around for a hero/villain and no outlet for it? Let’s work something out. I’ll be sure to include a special note about the assist in the front matter of the book for you to show off to all your buddies.

And that is that for the rewards. If you have any ideas or suggestions, feel free to email me or post in the comments here.

    Thanks!

    Raymond

  6. Update #6: Official Kickoff of the Blog Tour

I’m trying my best to get momentum going for Forging Truth and The Truth Saga, but it’s slow going. One of the things I’ve meant to do since day one is to get a blog tour rolling. So, starting today, I’m officially entering a period of fast(er) paced promoting efforts that’ll last at least into May. Of course, one of the biggest dates won’t be until July 23. I’ll take it, though, that’s for sure.

Here’s the link to the kickoff post on my author blog: http://wp.me/pQ36v-aL. If you’re curious about the first few stops, though, here’s a look at the first week to get you started:

April 15: Kickoff post on http://raymondmasters.wordpress.com

April 17: Podcast interview about turning the geeky things I love into creative works at http://www.robf.com.au/

As always, thanks for playing along at home. And please, don’t forget to spread the word to every living organism you come in contact with throughout the day.

    – Raymond

  8. Update #8: A Thank You to My Wife

Just published this over at Kickstarter. There are only 4 days left, and I badly need your assistance. Go here to check out my campaign:

    ******

If you’ll indulge me for a moment, I’d like to use today’s update as a way of saying thanks to my wife of THIRTEEN YEARS TODAY!!!

    *Ahem.*

    Sorry about that. Anyways…

We met in 1998 and married in ’99. I began writing in 2002. She had no idea what she was getting into. :) Being married to a writer is probably not all it’s cracked up to be. At times, she probably feels neglected. The blank page is my mistress and sometimes, it’s hard to fight her tempting embrace. I lay next to my wife, tossing and turning, praying my ideas will remain fresh through the night. She pretends to sleep as I give in and slip out of bed to sneak in just a few last words for the day. There probably shouldn’t be a time I shut my door to her, yet I have to close out the world when I’m in an urgent frenzy.

Then, there’s the financial side of it. As an Indy author, I am not given an allowance from my publisher. No, it comes from my wife. To be honest, I probably have to cut through just as much red tape. And it’s for the best. My wife knows that should she loosen the purse strings, I would return it wrong side out and threadbare. Author’s copies aren’t cheap when you print-on-demand. My cover artist, though reasonably priced, still enjoys being paid. And advertising? Well…

But bless her… My wife is always there for me. Steadfast, she watches over me to make sure I’m spending wisely, saving my sales receipts to pay for the next batch of books, and not wasting away my “free time” on the Internet. It is because of her that I click and clack at the keyboard when I really just feel like putting in the next disc of whatever series we’re watching at the time.

After all, if I don’t crank out the next volume in The Truth Saga, she’s threatening physical violence. And that is the hard love for which I am most thankful.

Happy anniversary, baby! I’ll get you that book soon enough.

    – Raymond

  9. With only 60 hours left to reach my Kickstarter goal, I posted another update. Here’s the link:

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/669727244/fund-the-truth-saga-book-2-and-get-books-1-and-2/posts/233995

    ********

Well, I received my order of 20 copies of Forging Truth. You would have thought it was Christmas around here. It might as well have been 200 copies, instead. My wife got a kick out of the fact that I made her feel how heavy the box was.

    “Your books are pretty heavy.”

    “I know.”

It’s a good feeling. My parents gave me $100 to go toward it. I’ll get to put some in a mom & pop store down the road. I have a few folks who have been waiting on me to get some more physical books, too. Also, I’m going to send one off to the powers-that-be at Books-a-Million to see about landing it on their regional author shelf. If so, I’ll get to do a book signing there, too.

    Fingers crossed.

Please, leave a reply.
